HSS is a material usually used in the manufacture of machine tools bits and other cutters. It is often used in power saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940’s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel Boris uses high speed steel (HSS) in the construction of his carving tools, not because it is one of the most popular grades of “tool steel” in the United States today, but because of its properties. Some types of steel are often harder but can be more brittle, while others can be too soft. HSS steel holds an edge and sharpens well without being too brittle or too soft—as a result of a high percentage of carbon with low levels of chromium and vanadium. His carving tools are heat-treated and the result is a tool with a hardness (Rc60-Rc62) that is great for woodcarving. Having a carving tool made of HSS, coupled with the correct method of sharpening, will ensure that this carving tool will be in your shop for many years.
